Maryland is a small state compared to neighboring Pennsylvania and Virginia, but with nearly 200 golf courses, one for about every 49 square miles of land, a golfer is never far from a fairway. The terrain varies widely, from the sand dunes of Ocean City to the rise and fall of the lush western mountain foothills. In Maryland's temperate climate, it is sometimes possible to play from March to November.
From the mountains of Western Maryland to the shores of Ocean City and the Eastern Shore to the Potomac River, Maryland is home to spectacular golf courses contoured around rolling hills, forests, lakes and meadows that entice you to play your heart out. Whether you play the dramatic landscape of Whiskey Creek or the exquisite tree-lined University of Maryland Golf Course, you'll discover a golf getaway that's right up your fairway.
Because Maryland lies so close to the country's seat of power, there are many tracks frequented by Presidents and other dignitaries. Most of these are private clubs. But everyone can watch the real celebrities (professional golfers) at work during the annual Kemper Open at TPC Avenel or when Tiger Woods hosts his tournament, the AT&T in July, at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda. Folks in the Baltimore-Washington area have come to expect a lot from their home courses. They get it, too. Many Maryland golf courses are the handiwork of world-class architects and are tended like works of art.
